Landline Phones in World

The total number of landline phones in the world reached 1.27 billion inChinese landline telephones 2008 which is 0.6 % more than in 2007, according to a study by Research and Markets.

While erosion of landline phones occurred in North America and western Europe, increses in Asia, Middle East, and Africa more than offset the losses in North American and western Europe.

There are now 595 million mobile phone subscribers in the Middle East and Africa–a 30% increase over the previous year.

China was by far the largest market in the world in 2008 for landline phones with 340 million subscribers.  Chinese landline phones represent 27 % of the entire world’s subscribers to fixed lines.
