How to Measure Engagement With Your Web Site
Chris Meares of Philly.com gave a great speech at the recent NAA (Newspaper Association of America) conference in Dallas. Meares, when describing how to measure engagement with a web site, showed what looked to be a difficult calculus program, but he was able to simplify it so that even this author could understand it.
Engagement = sum of (C+D+R+L+B+F+I)
Click Depth Index — page views per visit
Duration of Visit — time spent on site per visit
Regency Index — Visit velocity or the rate of returns to site
Loyalty Index — the measure of long term interaction
Brand Index — is the site bookmarked or a direct search term like “Philly.com” or “Philadelphia Inquirer.”
Feedback Index — any participatory action like sending in a photo.
Interaction Index — comments

QR Codes Can Be a Valuable Branding Tool
I’m sure you’ve seen them. They are those little boxes with the black and white squiggly patterns inside of them. You see them on packaging, at the airport, and in magazines.
Scan them and, bingo, you get something on your cell phone. It’s the latest mobile marketing craze and they are called QR codes.
A QR code is a specific matrix barcode that is readable by dedicated barcodes readers that are most commonly contained on smart phones. They have been popular in Japan and Korea for many years, but just beginning to have a significant impact in North America.
QR codes are a great way for a consumer to obtain more information about a product on his cell phone. The content might be a video about the product, more detailed information than is available on the item, or even a shortcut to download an app.
You are right that not everybody in the country has a smartphone. In fact, according to The Nielsen Company, 31% of Americans own a smartphone. That figure jumps to 45% for Asians and Hispanics whose population is younger than that of Whites and Blacks.
While QR codes are certainly sexy and fun to use, the lack of penetration for them means that a marketer should offer a text message marketing program in addition to the QR codes. Otherwise, you’ll be missing out on at least 69% of the American market.
One of the criticisms of QR codes that have been made is that they suffer from a lack of branding, whereas text message marketing has the distinct ability to brand with the proper keyword.
Nothing could be further from the truth. QR codes do have the ability to increase brand recognition by inserting a company logo within the QR code. Since only 40% of the QR code display is actually utilized to determine the destination of the code, savvy companies are inserting visible branding within the code itself. That gives the company the coolness factor of the QR code plus the branding value.
Online Personals Revenue for Newspaper Web Sites
Newspapers continue to struggle with revenues. While newspapers have done a good job of getting visitors to their web sites, they have not done a good of monetizing their web sites to the same level as they have done with print. The decrease is most evident in classified advertising where newspapers once dominated.
Classified advertising used to include voice personals and Advanced Telecom Services was one of the major suppliers of newspaper voice personals. Today, however, like so many other products, personals have shifted to online personals and, for the most part, newspapers have missed out on the online personals phenomenon.
Today, however, MatchLink, from Advanced Telecom Services, offers newspapers an online dating solution that will help it re-capture some of the magic that it once had with newspaper voice personals.
MatchLink from Advanced Telecom Services is an online dating product that is customized to the look and feel of the daily newspaper. It also makes the newspaper product more relevant to young singles.

To obtain this rating, Advanced Telecom Services has had to address numerous problems from other companies with similar sounding names. Since the company name is rather generic, there are bound to be other companies with similar names. One company in particular that sells software online has created numerous complaints that had been erroneously assigned to our Wayne, Pennsylvania company.
“In an industry that has had its struggles with some unscrupulous vendors, we are very pleased to be given an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau,” said Bob Bentz, president of Advanced Telecom Services. “Our reputation in the business community is very important to us and we work very hard to protect that. Any customers considering working with ATS should know that our record is spotless.”
