Mobile Stats from World Telemedia

One of the more interesting sales pieces from the exhibit hall floor of the World Telemedia event in Amsterdam this week was one called “Is Your Business Mobile?” from UK service bureau Oxygen 8.amsterdam mobile marketing

While most of the statistics on the literature were rather general, they were certainly interesting to read.  Keep in mind that most of these statistics are likely taken from the UK market, although there is no indication of such and no source on the piece.

  • 5 billion mobile phones are in use.
  • 1.08 billion are smartphones.
  • 98% of text messages are opened immediately.
  • One-half of all local searches are performed on mobile devices.
  • 86% of mobile owners use theirs while watching TV.
  • 29% of mobile users are open to scanning a mobile tag to get coupons.
  • 75% of smartphone owners would like to get notified of new offers by SMS.

How Many Americans are Using QR Codes?

Just how often are QR Codes being scanned?

Porsche QR Code

Porsche

ComScore said that 14 million Americans scanned a QR Code in June, 2011.  We reported on the ComScore QR Code study in an earlier article here.

We’ve seen some great applications initiated by a QR Code scan such as the dress the model program from Zappo’s.  But, getting legitimate information on the number of successful scans is a different story.

According to a story in Advertising Age, Allure readers scanned a QR Code more than 200,000 times in just three days in its “Free Stuff” issue.

Additional research by GfK MRI Starch showed that 4% of magazine readers scanned a QR Code in the first half of this year.  Many ads did way better.  Porsche’s ad in Men’s Journal, was scanned by 17% of the magazine’s readers.  Overall, men appear to scan QR Codes more often than women do, according to the same study.  Not surprisingly, younger readers, age 18-34, scanned QR Codes at a 6% rate compared to only 3% for those 35+.

44% of Holiday Searches By Mobile

mobile web site

Cars2Go mobile web site from Advanced Mobile.

If you are a retailer, you are already planning for the 2011 Christmas season.  You are ordering the new merchandise, hiring more staff, and planning your marketing.

This year, however, you had better be prepared with a mobile web site and other forms of mobile marketing to maximize sales.

According to Google, 44% of all holiday shopping searches in 2011 will be done by mobile devices.  Searches will be for last minute gifts and store locators.  The swing will be especially prevalent in the week before Thanksgiving leading up to Black Friday and the final shopping week prior to Christmas.  Contributing to the anticipated increase in mobile search this holiday season is the continuing increase in smartphone ownership in the USA.

“We expect that mobile activity will continue to grow significantly as we enter into holiday season 2011,” said Sonja Lee, product marketing manager at Google.  ”It is incredibly important that businesses are present on mobile — it is where your customers will be this holiday season.”

Google’s research shows that the number of queries via mobile grew three times from 2009 to 2011.  Despite the amazing growth, 79% of Google’s largest advertisers still do not have a mobile web site!

The lack of a mobile presence hurts sales.  According to the Google study, 61% of users who experience frustration with a retail web site that is not optimized are unlikely to return.  Worse yet, 40% will immediately move off to a competitor’s site.
