US Network Operator Share of Total Mobile Market

According to comScore MobiLens (3 month. average ending Dec-2011), it was found that the four largest mobile network providers – Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile  accounted for nearly 78 percent  of the total U.S. mobile subscriber market. Verizon led the U.S. mobile market as the carrier for 31.6 percent of mobile subscribers. AT&T ranked second at 26.3 percent, followed by Sprint (10.5 percent) and T-Mobile (9.5 percent).

But the smartphone market shows a different scenario, with AT&T accounting for the largest share at 33.5 percent, Verizon ranked second which accounted for 30.4 percent share. Sprint, which also saw the iPhone debut on its network near the end of 2011, reached 13.7 percent of smartphone subscribers, while T-Mobile accounted for 11.3 percent.

Smartphone Share of Total Mobile Audience

According to comScore MobiLens, 3 months average ending December 2011 versus December 2010, in the U.S. 27% of the mobile users used smartphones in December 2010 and 41.8% of the mobile users used smartphones in December 2011 and in the EU5 countries 31% of the mobile users used smartphones in December 2010 while 44% of the users used smartphones in December 2011. Among the EU5 countries UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany; 34.2%, 37.6%, 35.2%, 25.8%, 25%, respectively of the mobile phone users used smartphones in December 2010. On the other hand, 51.3%, 51%, 43.9%, 40% and 37% of the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, respectively used smartphones in December 2011. This trend shows how smartphones are being adopted by the Mobile Audience dramatically.

Smartphones Surpass Feature Phones as the Top Acquired Device Type

According to comScore MobiLens, in the year 2011, there were different types of smartphones available in the market. In the US, there were more than 400 smartphone devices in the market which gave the consumers option of choosing a smartphone among different ones. In some cases, smartphones surpassed the feature phones, for the customers who bought mobile device for the first time in 2011. During 2011, Germany, France, Italy, and Canada, and the U.S. saw this milestone while the UK and Spain passed this threshold in 2010. This trend is being expected during 2012 when the majority of the mobile users are expected to buy smartphones.

Non-Computer Traffic for Selected Markets

According to the data provided by comScore Device Essentials, December 2011, the increasing trend of using non-computers (e.g. mobile, tablets, others) for using the internet was observed. The non-computer traffic for Singapore, UK, U.S., Australia, Japan, Canada, Spain, India, France, Brazil were 11.5%, 9.5%, 8.2%, 7.7%, 6.5%, 5.2%, 5.1%, 2.8%, and 1.5%, respectively.

Share of Smartphone Users across Markets

According to the data provided by comScore MobiLens, 3 months average ending December 2011, 41.8% of the users from the United States and 45.3% users from Canada used smartphones instead of mobile phones. In UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany the percentage of smartphone consumers were 51.3%, 51%, 43.9%, 40% and 37%, respectively. In Japan 16.6% used smartphones.

Time Spent Per Media

Americans Now Spend More Time With Mobile Than Print

In 2010, Americans spent the same amount of time with their mobile devices as they did with newspapers and magazines combined–50 minutes.  Buoyed by increasing sales of tablets, time spent with mobile increased to 65 minutes in 2011 while newspaper and magazine readership declined to just 44 minutes.

Time spent with television and video increased again from 2010 to 2011.  The average American now spends 4:34 per day with television and video.

But, despite the proliferation of time spent on various forms of media, mobile continues to not get its fair share of the American advertising dollar.  Meaning, there is a great opportunity for savvy businesses and brands to reach consumers on their mobile phones and devices.

Americans Interested in Using Mobile Phone as Credit Card

Americans are increasingly interested in using their mobiles for payments.  As per this study from Nielsen, 70% of all those who download apps are interested in using their mobiles like a credit card.

Advanced Telecom Services will soon be introducing its new “Mo-Bill” service which will allow consumers to pay for online and mobile web services without the need for a credit card.  Mo-Bill will allow consumers to pay for items online and on the mobile web and have the charges applied to their mobile phone bill.

Mo-Bill is a great alternative to premium sms and the payouts are much better.

Smartphone Penetration by Age and Income USA

The latest smartphone penetration statistics are out and nearly half of all Americans now own a smartphone.

As of January, 2012, according to the latest Nielsen data, 48% of American adults own smartphones.  That is up from 43% just four months earlier.

The Nielsen study was conducted by a survey of 20,000 mobile users.  While Nielsen tabs the number at 48%, comScore’s December, 2011 study, for example, had the number at just 42%.
